Flying termites are sometimes confused with the flying ants that bother us during certain times of the year. You need to know how to tell a flying ant from a flying termite to protect your property and your home. These flying pests can be more devastating then the flying ant, which just gets in your hair and bothers you went you are outdoors.The flying termite is different looking than the flying ant. The flying ant as a head, thorax and an abdomen and the termite has a head and a body. The antenna differs as well in ants and termites. The termite antennae bends forward while the ant’s antenna has a ninety degree bend. If you know the difference, you can protect yourself by searching areas of your home that may have termite infestations.
The life cycle of a flying termite is far less then other species of termites. The flying termite has one main goal and that is to reproduce. When you do see the swarms of flying termites, you can be assured that termites are taking up residency in your home. This is the time to investigate and find the termites to start the process of elimination. Be aware that the flying termites just mean young ones are in the ground or your home.
Although the flying termites cannot feed on your home the young termites they product can and will feed from your wood structure. In other words, if you see the flying termites, they are not feeding, but the young they produce are somewhere close by. In this country alone, people spend over one billion dollars to rid their homes of this infestation and sometimes have to have follow up care if the problem persists. If you compare termite damage to that of a hurricane, the termite will win by a long run. These annoying home wreckers eat away at our homes and move on to the next one.
Because the termite is so resilient, people sometimes do not realize for years that they are in immediate danger of replacing thousands of dollars worth of materials to correct what the termites have done to their homes. Because the female or the queen will lay eggs every day, termites will never become extinct in our day. Always check your home when you see the flying termites to ensure your safety in the case that you are under attack.
